That could be good as a mod, but not hearing anything outside your ship doesn't make a really fun gameplay.
Star Wars had a workaround, which said that the sounds that come from other objects in the void of space are generated by the ship's computer to increase the pilot's awareness.

You have a good point. Yes, the player must notice a new advert. But easter eggs and things like this are usually easy to notice since they have no icon and unusual titles (especially if you've been playing long enough to take on Rondel guards). That was my original plan, but I thought counterweighted cabins would be better because they require less energy to operate under acceleration. EDIT: Well, you could technically get some of the spent energy back on the way down, but less effectively. Also, a counterweight makes the whole system safe...
